Our Guide to the Best Winter Fruit Picking in Perth

Looking for a unique winter activity? A morning spent fruit picking in Perth – kiwifruit or persimmons straight from the tree or vine might be one of the most wholesome farm experiences you can have!
We recently visited Willow Springs Orchard in Bedfordale to experience their pick-your-own kiwifruit season, and it turned into one of those simple but memorable outings that reminds you how lucky we are to have local growers right on Perth’s doorstep.
Kiwi fruit picking in Perth

During winter, the orchard opens sections of its kiwifruit vines for visitors to harvest their own fruit. We were greeted by the friendly owners, given our picking bags and shown how to identify ripe fruit, including the difference between the gold and green varieties.
Before long we were wandering beneath the vines, searching for the perfect kiwis hidden amongst the leaves.

The experience is refreshingly straightforward. There is no entry fee and visitors simply pay for what they pick at $8 per kilogram. Buckets and bags are provided, so all you need to bring is appropriate footwear, particularly after rain when the orchard can become muddy underfoot.
If you’re planning a visit, bookings are essential. We recommend checking the Willow Springs Orchard Facebook page for the latest picking dates, opening hours and seasonal fruit availability before heading to the farm, as harvest windows can vary depending on the weather and growing conditions.
Kiwifruit season typically runs from April through to July, although availability depends on weather conditions and the season.

Persimmon Picking in Perth
If you miss the kiwifruit season, don’t worry – the orchard also offers pick-your-own persimmons earlier in the year, typically from March through to June.
Persimmons are available for $10 per kilogram and offer another opportunity to experience harvesting fruit straight from the tree. Their sweet flavour and vibrant orange colour make them one of the highlights of autumn in the Perth Hills.

More Than Just Fruit Picking
One of our favourite parts of visiting was that the experience doesn’t end once you’ve filled your bag. The farm shop stocks seasonal fruit and vegetables along with local eggs, honey and preserves, while a cute coffee van – The Flower Garden Bakery serves hot drinks and homemade treats. There’s even picnic tables, complete with wipes for messy fingers, that make it easy to linger a little longer.

There’s also an enclosed play area for kids to run off some energy and resident goats, including an adorable pygmy goat that proved very popular with visitors during our trip.

Seasonal Fruit Picking in Perth throughout the year
One of the reasons we’d happily return is the incredible variety of produce grown on the property throughout the seasons. Depending on the time of year, visitors may find lychees, mangoes, pomegranates, dragonfruit, chestnuts, longans, mandarins, custard apples, avocados, lemons and loquats available alongside the orchard’s more well-known persimmons and kiwifruit.

A Winter Day Trip Worth Taking
Located around 40 minutes from Perth in the beautiful Bedfordale farmland, Willow Springs Orchard offers a chance to slow down, support local growers and enjoy a hands-on experience that feels a world away from the city.
