Lake Leschenaultia: The Ultimate Guide

Lake Leschenaultia is a hidden gem in the Perth Hills, offering the ideal blend of adventure, relaxation, and family-friendly fun. Whether it’s a lazy Sunday picnic, an adventurous weekend getaway, or an easy day trip from Perth, this is one of the best year-round spots to unwind in nature. Rug up in winter and bring the marshmallows for roasting by the fire pit or bring your bathers in summer – it’s beautiful in every season.
Nestled within 168 hectares of tranquil bushland near the charming town of Chidlow, this beautiful man-made lake was originally built as a railway reservoir to service steam locomotives in the early 1900s. Today, it’s a much-loved local destination for day trips and camping getaways – perfect for families, couples, and outdoor enthusiasts. You’ll find cool shaded areas, grassy lawns, white sandy beaches, and a playground to keep the little ones happy.
Where Is Lake Leschenaultia?
Located just 45–50 minutes from Perth’s CBD in Chidlow, take Great Eastern Highway past Mundaring, then follow the signs. There’s plenty of parking near the main beach and picnic area, where most of the lake’s activities begin.

Why You’ll Love It
Surrounded by shaded bushland and spacious picnic spots, Lake Leschenaultia offers calm, clear waters ideal for swimming, floating, or relaxing by the shore. Kayak and SUP hire is available on summer weekends (10am–3pm), and the playground is a hit with younger visitors.
In the cooler months, enjoy leisurely walks, lakeside picnics, or tackle the mountain bike trails. A fabulous new kiosk, The Flackseed, opened in January 2025 and features a menu inspired by native Australian flavours. Enjoy sausage rolls, nourish bowls, homemade cakes, artisan icy poles and seriously good coffee!
Come spring, the wildflower displays are breathtaking, offering a photographer’s dream. The lake was actually named after the vivid blue Leschenaultia flower, just one of many native blooms you’ll spot on a bushwalk.

What You Need to Know
First things first – entry is completely free, which makes this an even more appealing day trip. The lake is open every day of the year, from 8:30am on weekdays and 8:00am on weekends, with gates closing about half an hour after sunset. That said, it’s always good to check ahead during periods of extreme heat or high fire danger.
Leave your furry friends at home, pets aren’t allowed at the lake, even in the car, so it’s strictly a pet-free zone.
Parking is easy and close to the main beach area, so you won’t need to lug all your gear too far. And if you’re planning to camp, it’s a good idea to book in advance, especially on weekends or during the school holidays.
